NAPFKUCHEN
(Turban Cake)

1/2 cup butter
1 tablespoon lemon peel
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup sugar, divided in half
4 eggs, separated
3/4 cup milk
2 cups sifted flour
2 1/4 teaspoons baking powder

Cream together butter, lemon peel, vanilla, 1/2 cup sugar and egg yolks.  Add milk slowly. Beat egg whites until stiff. Add 1/2 cup sugar. Add flour and baking powder to creamed mixture. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.  Turn batter into mold. Bake about 55 minutes at 350 F.  For variety, add 1/2 cup freshly ground poppy seeds or 1/2 cup rum soaked raisins.
