The cast iron pot that almost wasn't

Wolfgang, like my late stepfather, loves trains, and anything train-related.  So, every once in awhile, we find ourselves in Limburg at the train yard looking at the various railroad signals as they replace them on the Lahntalbahn, along with old train cars in various stages of disassembly.

Right next to the yard is a scrap yard.   It's not large, but open, with no fencing as most of the others do.  So, we usually walk around, amazed at all the cast iron radiators, railroad ties and other discarded machinery, such as demolition balls and tractors.

This one day, as we walked past the huge pile of discarded truck brakes, cast iron bathtubs and pipes, Wolf suddenly said "Here's another one".  Now, he had just said, "Here's one", in which he was referring to a small railroad wheel.  So, I took it to mean that he had seen another one.  He moves a truck brake aside and pulls up an old cast iron pot.  You would figure that, with the cold and rainy weather we've had, plus the weight of the other iron on it, not to mention having the stuff thrown on it, that it would be cracked or broken.   Naturally, it was terribly rusted, but in perfect shape otherwise.

So, it went in a plastic bag in the back of the car and went home with us.

I had imagined many hours of clean up work - looking at the pictures, you'll understand why.  But Wolf, being the darling that he is, was out the next day with his drill with a wire brush attachment.  I think he was just as excited, if not more so, than I was at his find.  It took quite a while to get the rust off, but he was diligent in his work.

It's cleaned up nicely, and has been seasoned, ready for use.  Here are the "before" and "after" pictures of what has become known as "Wolf's pot".

Now, if he could only find the lid!! <g>

If you have cats, you understand this picture.  Cats just love sitting in anything they can find.  This is Mobo, who decided to try it out for size.
